The I Spy Scrappy Log

This is a variation of the I Spy quilt on our website. This child-sized quilt finishes to roughly 36" x 42" and features one very fast and easy 6" block rotated to form the rows.

Cut

FWB = Full Width of Bolt

  1. Scrap Rectangles 2” x 3 1/2” (120 needed, 4 per block: For scraps, the yardage varies but as illustrated below, 3/8 yard for each of four fabrics. )

  2. Sash Rectangles 2” x 6 1/2” (60 needed all from the same solidish fabric, 2 per block, 29" of one fabric)

  3. Inner Border: 4 strips 1 1/2” wide FWB (1/4 yard)

  4. Outer Border: 4 strips 2 1/2” wide FWB (1/2 yard)

  5. Back and Batting: 1 piece each 50" long but FWB (1 1/2 yards each)

  6. Optional Contrast Binding: 4 strips 2 1/4" wide FWB (3/8 yard)


Sew

Sew four small scrap rectangles into a log as illustrated above. Make 30 logs.

Sew two sash rectangles to the longs sides of the log as illustrated above. Make 30 of these blocks. (Raw Size: 6 1/2” Square, Finished Size: 6“ Square)


Sew 5 blocks together alternating the rotation as illustrated. Make 3 of these columns.



Sew 5 blocks together alternating the rotation as illustrated. Make 3 of these columns.



Alternate the columns as illustrated to sew the quilt field together.



Illustrated in a few colors to clearly show how blocks are rotated.

Sew two strips of the inner border to the two opposite long sides of the quilt field. Sew two strips of the inner border to the two opposite short sides of the quilt field. The inner border is illustrated in the same color as the sash rectangles.


Repeat for the outer border. Quilt then bind.
